Historical Bodrum

You'll be in good company if you include Bodrum in the itinerary for your Turkey holidays. The Bodrum of today has risen from the site of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, which was the capital of the kingdom of Caria. Many familiar historical figures from classic Greek mythology hailed from Halicarnassus. Among others, Herodotus the 'father of history' was born in Halicarnassus, and Artemisia the warrior woman led the Carian fleet to war.

The Mausoleum
The Mausoleum is Bodrum's oldest significant historical site, and is a must see destination on your Turkey holidays. It was built by Artemisia II in honour of her husband Mausollos, and overlooked the city for nearly 16 centuries before being destroyed in an earthquake. Its ruins were then further broken up to use in the construction of the nearby castle. A masterpiece of architecture, it was hailed as one of the wonders of the ancient world. Although little remains of the mausoleum today, the site pays homage to this monumental structure which in its prime stood over 50 metres high.

The Amphitheatre
Located on the Bodrum to Gumbet road, the Ancient Amphitheatre of Bodrum dates back to the time of Mausoluss in the Hellenistic age (300-30BC). It is carved out of the hillside surrounding Bodrum, providing a panoramic view of the city and beyond. With an original seating capacity of around 13000, the theatre consists of three distinct sections; the stage, the orchestra seating (in a half oval) and the audience seating. It is still possible to see inscriptions of names on some of the seating acknowledging the original patrons of the theatre. Today this remarkably well preserved site is still in use during the high season of holidays in Turkey for outdoor concerts and shows.

St Peter's Castle
The city's most visible monument is built over 30,000 square ft on a promontory in the Bodrum harbour. Highly visible from both land and sea, St Peter's Castle is one of the world's best preserved medieval monuments. Its origins go back to the Knights of St. John, who constructed the castle in the early part of the 15th century using parts of the ruined Mausoleum. It originally served as a military stronghold, and in later years saw life as a prison, but today the castle houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. This fascinating museum takes you on a journey through the rise and demise of the ancient mariners who met their fate on the Anatolian shores. You can see the famed 'Glass Wreck', as well as one of the oldest shipwrecks of the world (14th century BC) and finds from several Bronze Age Ships. The museum world renowned and serves as a major tourism draw card on a holiday to Turkey.

Visiting Innsbruck, Austria

Innsbruck is known internationally for its winter sports, having hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. Innsbruck is located in a broad valley between high mountains, and it is also close to the Brenner Pass that connects Italy with Austria via the easiest route through the Alps.

Innsbruck has been fought over many times throughout the centuries dating back to Roman times. This history is apparent in the very architecture, starting with the impressive Schloss Ambras Castle, also the Imperial Palace, the Baroque Cathedral of Dom zu St. Jakob, along with many churches, civic buildings and a triumphal arch which was erected in 1765. Also be sure to check out the Golden Roof building which was constructed for Maximilian in 1500 under gilded copper tile.

Skiing is obviously a major attraction for tourism, but the old town is quite an attraction of its own. Pedestrian streets Maria Theresa and Herzog Friedrich provide an endless shopping delight for any serious shopper, and the restaurants and cafés are top-notch. Tourism is the main industry in Innsbruck, as you will notice the city is set up to cater to tourists.

The Schloss Ambras Castle is not to be strictly admired from without, as it is an art museum of the highest order, housing a portrait gallery with about 300 portraits from the 15th to 19th century. Be sure to check out the Chamber of Art and Curiosities while you are there. There are many other fine museums in Innsbruck as well, including the Bell Museum and the Riesenrundgemälde.

Wintertime is for skiing and winter sports, but there is much to do and enjoy in the summertime, including cable car rides to the magnificent Alpine Garden south of the city. There is no shortage of outdoor activities in summer to keep you entertained and getting lots of mountain air.

Online Luxury Hotels & Resort

Hotels and resorts are two terms which have an importance in travel and tourism. Can you think where you will stay when you will go to some place where you have not gone at any time and are completely new for you? Let me tell you one more thing that it is not so easy to find a better hotel which cost the least in the city about which you know nothing. Hence you will have to be extra cautious while you decide to hire some hotel which according to you is the best hotel.

Some of the major issues as far as the online reservation of hotels and resorts is concerned are as follows:

1. The first thing which you will have to keep in mind is the class. If you are a common person then it is quite sure that you will not be able to hire a room which is a business class room. Hence prepare your budget and then go for the online booking. You should keep in mind that once you do the online payment then your money will not be refunded. Hence you should make sure that you are quite final about your decision.

2. The second thing which you will have to keep in mind is that you will have to decide that, is the hotel which you have selected provides the online reservation or not? If it is not providing the online reservation then it is well and good. However if it is do providing the online reservation facility then your works starts now.

3. When you will click at the online reservation button of any hotels site, then you will see one form. Let me tell you that you will be asked to fill various text boxes. All of them will require you to pay some information or the other.

4. The most important part of the form is the luxury section. You might feel that some hotel is providing you the room at around $45. But you should keep in mind that the cost of the hotel room can increase if you choose some luxuries while filling the form. Hence you will have to decide that which luxury you can afford.

5. The next thing which you will have to keep in mind is that you will have to decide that in which part of the city you want the hotel to be placed. It is quite obvious that if you are a businessman then you will definitely want your hotel to be situated near the airport or the railway station.

These are some of the tips regarding filling the online reservation form of any hotel or resort. Let me also tell you that you will definitely find these tips to be quite useful.

Best and Worst Careers For a Sagittarius

If you're Sagittarian and are unhappy with your current position you should consider what you want to do first. A big paycheck wont just cut it for sure. Sagittarians are the intellectual type. It's easy for them to learn about new things. Thus, they can get bored easily. They are adventurous people who are not afraid of taking risks. It won't be a surprise for this person to switch jobs everytime they see fit (meaning when they get tired of what they're doing which can happen all the time or until they find the perfect job for them). The archer is known to aim for high goals but no matter how much they make or how high the position is, if they feel they're getting caged in they will look for something else.

Figure out what you are good at and what you love doing. Because a Sagittarian has a lot of interests they also have a lot of big ideas and they are very optimistic about these. They won't mind investing all the time and resources they have for a certain project. A lot of Sagittarians are entreprenuers so they get into their own businesses and most of them succeed on this. Having a good grasp of the bigger picture might also help them be good managers. They see the big picture and then share it with the team so they can work on it. It won't be hard as Sagittarians are natural born teachers. They are good at interacting with people and they have the patience to explain their ideas to them. That being said, Sagittarians can also be teachers and writers. The archer loves challenges. He wouldn't mind a bit of pressure (as a matter of fact, he is good under pressure) because he likes finishing things he already started. He is very active and also love the out-doors so a career in sports, travel or tourism might be suitable.

To sum that up, the more active Sagittarians lean on sports and traveling/tourism, where they can meet people and move around a lot. On the other hand, the more intellectual types can go for more intellectual professions as trading, law and business.

Sagittarians as a boss. Generally, Sagittarian bosses are easy to get along with. They are very generous when giving bonuses or a raise specially with employees who they know are working well. They can also be generous with time or deadlines and are very reasonable ... most of the times. So if you're having a hard time keeping up with the deadline he might just cut you some slack provided you have acceptable reasons. One bad side about a Sagittarian boss is that he can be stubborn and change his mind a lot. Specially when he gets one of his big ideas.

Sagittarians as an employee. Sagittarians love being with people and working with people. He's a very good team player. Being always happy and optimistic he will serve as an inspiration or a morale booster for his fellow employees.

Some of the careers or prefessional fields that a Sagittarian could consider are: Entrepreneur, Teacher/Professor, Lawyer, Sales and Marketing, Writer/Journalist, Public Relations, Trader, Sports Instructor, Athlete, Travel Agent, Tourism related fields.

Finding the Best Value on Two Weeks in the Sun

The tourism industry really has been hit hard this year. Not only have they had to deal with falling visitor numbers because of the recession, they have had tighter credit as banks look to lend to better performing businesses and shore up their balance sheets. Then another hit came along when the swine flu outbreak started to hit.

The bad news for the tourism industry means there is now more supply than demand for foreign holidays and flights therefore many people have still been able to book foreign holidays as they have benefited from discounts not normally seen.

If you are thinking of jetting off for some sun before the season is out then you have a number of options. Firstly travelling in September will give you better deals since the kids will be back in school. If you are after the standard two weeks in the sun then there are plenty of locations to choose from, the advice at the beginning of the summer season seemed to be - avoid Europe. The exchange rate meant holidays would be much more expensive and any savings would likely disappear.

However recently the Euro exchange rate has improved significantly and it is worth comparing with other holiday destinations to see if there are savings to be had, particularly in Spain. 10% of the Spanish economy comes from the tourism industry and sadly many hotels are lying empty therefore you can find discounts as much as 50% of the price of the room just so these businesses can generate some income.

There are many top locations in Spain so have a search for a Benidorm or Alicante flight to see if you can get yourself a cheap flight deal. Certainly you will find overall cheaper deals to locations slightly further afar like Bulgaria and Argentina where you can still enjoy a great holiday with the benefit of a low price tag.

It is worth taking the time to search the internet for a few hours using comparison sites and browsing forums and it shouldn't be long before you come across a cracking deal.

Peru Travel Guide - Enjoying Machu Picchu Tours

The defining memory of most Peru vacations is the moment upon reaching the lookout point known as the Watchman's Hut, the starting point of all Machu Picchu tours, where the staggering beauty of this world-famous citadel is finally revealed in its glorious setting, hidden within the clouds atop a jungle-clad mountain.

By far the most convenient way to visit Machu Picchu is with a provider of Peru vacation packages, but for the most adventurous and those with a decent grasp of Spanish, it's possible to find your own way there and track down a guide on the day.

Since its re-discovery in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, an American explorer working for Yale University, Machu Picchu has become the stuff of legends; an iconic image in the minds of millions, with all its connotations of adventure, exploration and mythical ancient history.

Surprisingly though, the reality of Machu Picchu is much more down-to-earth. Recent archeological investigations have suggested that the site was not a center of spiritual and religious importance, as was previously assumed.

In fact, some archeologists are now suggesting that Machu Picchu was originally intended as a center of learning, a kind of Inca University or better yet, a grand and very elaborate holiday resort for the empire's nobility.

Nevertheless, it remains undisputed that Machu Picchu is one of the best preserved, most intriguing, and jaw-droppingly beautiful archeological sites in South America and the entire world.

Part of the citadel's allure has always been its inaccessibility, located deep within Peru's Sacred Valley, surrounded by unforgiving mountains and plunging valleys complete with dense sub-tropical forest and gushing rivers.

Thankfully, accessing the site these days is much easier, not least due to the train line which was extended to the modern town of Aguas Calientes at the mountain base. It is now possible to arrive at Aguas Calientes by train, spend the night in this busy, tourism-oriented town and catch an early morning bus up to the citadel itself the following day.

Most visitors are keen to arrive at Machu Picchu as early as possible, and although the first bus ($14 return) departs at around 5:30am, the keenest are in the queue from as early as 3am.

Taking things this seriously is probably only worthwhile if you intend to climb Machu Picchu's sister mountain, Huayna Picchu on the same day: entrance is limited to 400 people per day and tickets sell out very early. Otherwise, aim to be in the queue from around 5am and you'll still be able to make an early bus and catch the citadel before most of the crowds arrive.

Before reaching the ticket office you'll find a number of guides ($15-20 for 2.5 hours) most of who tend to be very professional and knowledgeable, although the standard of English can be inconsistent. Information inside the site is non-existent, and for this reason alone, consider booking your trip in advance with a Peru tours operator with a guaranteed standard of tour guide.

Most guided tours last for around two and a half hours and will include a comprehensive circuit of the site. You'll start at the Watchman's Hut, which offers the best views of the site (the ones that are on all the postcards) before making your way towards the northern, and highest, edge of the citadel where some of the most important relics remain: the Temple of the Three Windows, the main temple, the Intihuatana (sun rock) and the Sacred Rock, all of which line the central, grassy main plaza.

Recent progress in the field of astro-archeology has revealed a great many new lessons in the nature and layout of Machu Picchu, and your guide will be able to point out some of the many alignments of these important points with the stars and the solar system.

Of particular significance are the points on the surrounding mountains that align with the citadel during important solar-phases, including the summer and winter solstice.

In addition, along the opposite mountain ranges to the south, you'll be able to see the last stages of the celebrated Inca Trail, as it leads down from the Sun Gate towards Machu Picchu itself.

Once your tour is complete, you have the option to walk the 'wrong way' up the Inca Trail towards the Sun Gate, where you'll be rewarded with a different (and much less crowded) perspective on the site.

Alternatively, you can make the short hike to the Intipata, or Inca bridge, around 45 minutes away from Machu Picchu. The bridge is constructed along the face of a cliff and offers some stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Unfortunately the bridge itself has been closed to the public for safety reasons.

If you have the time, consider sticking around for the rest of the day, and relax in one of Machu Picchu's quieter corners. There is just one thing as impressive as sun-rise over the citadel: sun-set.

While visiting Machu Picchu, be sure to remember the following considerations:

- The citadel is a protected site of significant historical importance. For this reason strict restrictions exist on what can be taken into the site, including plastic bottles, metal-tipped walking poles and large backpacks (these can be stored at the ticket office for $.50)

- On-site services including toilets, food and drinks are non-existent and outside the ticket office, the prices are high. But you are permitted to bring your own food and drink in a small day-sack.

- Peak visiting time is from around 10am to mid-afternoon. Before and after these times, the crowds are much thinner, and the queues for the return bus journey are much shorter.

This guide to Machu Picchu tours was written by a travel-loving Peru vacations expert at Peru For Less, a member of the Latin America For Less family.

Oman - A Rising Tourist Destination

Oman is the prime tourist destination of the Gulf, and Oman luxury holidays are becoming increasingly popular. With warm weather, sparkling ocean waters and luxury accommodation, an Oman holiday is sure to be a good one. There are a number of reasons why Oman's tourism industry is destined to do better than its neighbours.

Expansion of the Tourism Industry

Up until 1970, Oman was a region that was closed to the outside world, and Oman holidays were by no means at the forefront of tourists' minds. But tourists are beginning to flock to the region, and the tourism industry forms an integral part of the region's economic plans for the future. Resorts, hotels, and new travel companies are popping up all over the region, and Oman luxury holidays are becoming increasingly popular.

Oman's Prime Location

Oman is in a prime location, with beautiful scenery and many tourist sites, which makes Oman holidays the most popular for tourism in the Gulf. Its wildlife and ecological features are exceptional, making it popular amongst holidaymakers and tourists. It also has a number of cultural and historic sites, making for interesting activities when on an Oman holiday.

Oman is Economically Ready for Tourism Development

Oman is currently in an economically desirable position because one of its primary exports, hydrocarbon, is being sold at a high price. This means that the sultanate has begun developing its economy away from oil and gas production, into newer areas. Sultan Qaboos Bin Said wants to incorporate the growing tourism industry into the sultanate's economic plans, and promote Oman luxury holidays.

Because it is the most popular tourist destination in the Gulf, the tourism industry could well develop into a central part of Oman's economy. Perhaps now is a good time to visit Oman, because its scenery and historical sites are superior, and it would be good to go on an Oman holiday before the region becomes a major tourist destination.

Oman's Political Stability Makes Tourism Possible

The sultanate has been, and continues to be, politically stable and safe for tourists. This is perhaps one of the biggest selling points for Oman holidays, as opposed to holidays in other regions of the Gulf. Sultan Qaboos Bin Said has ruled over the sultanate since his accession in 1970. Under his leadership, Oman has been modernised, united and opened, following the more closed and divided rule of the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman.

This puts Oman at a significant advantage as far as tourism is concerned, as it is the most stable and safe region in the Gulf, which largely responsible for the rise in Oman holiday bookings.

Oman Maintains International Relationships

Oman has been clever in its approach to international relations, remaining in relatively neutral ground. This is excellent in terms of tourism, because people from all over the world will be willing to go on Oman holidays. Oman manages to maintain good relations with the west and with Iran, and even has cordial relations with Israel. It also has a good relationship with the US, unlike many of its neighbours. All in all, it has maintained good international relationships, making Oman Luxury holidays a perfect choice.

Claire Bryant is an Oman holidays specialist for key2holidays, an online tour operator specialising in Oman luxury holidays, as well as holidays to Australia, South Africa, the Caribbean, Italy, the Far East, the Maldives, Mauritius Sri Lanka and the Seychelles, and Dubai. key2holidays has a dedicated team of experienced travel consultants to share their knowledge and help you to plan and book your ideal holiday.

Internet & Tourism

Airlines were the first to invest considerable resources on the web, with the aim of transforming their website into their main selling tool for the consumer, excluding the traditional system of intermediation in hand so far to tour operators and travel agents. Airlines, and generally the major transport operators have thus created a channel of direct negotiation with the client. The hotel industry has instead found more difficulties in detaching themselves from traditional intermediation channels due to high fragmentation and therefore strong weakness of single structures in respect to the market. These structures are difficult to reach directly, but can be reached by a multitude of more or less convincing intermediaries. In particular, consumers are often confused with the great number of websites that offer the same structure at different conditions.

Travel portals sell the same products at different prices. So, while for a structure site X can be more convenient, for another, site Y could more convenient. It follows that the consumer who wants to buy the most advantageous rate is forced to make long and complex research. On the web it often happens that who wins are websites that invest a lot in advertising rather than websites with the best prices.

In the UK, tariff comparison portals do not draw the same success they have in other countries (I speak from personal experience, because I am promoting a site that operates in several European countries), but they can certainly make life easier for all those people who are looking for savings on the Internet and are therefore willing to devote more time to the reservation of their vacation. This kind of site really does not sell travel, but collects all rates available on other websites. Therefore they are a starting point for the consumer, who will then be directed to web pages to complete the purchase, with the undeniable advantage of convenience, simplicity and speed.

But a question is still unanswered. Why if I go directly to an hotel to stay one night I pay more than If I would have booked a room on the Internet? This is due to the fact that the supplier grants lowest fares to companies who sell on the Internet (always speaking from personal experience, as a tourist). As we said before, in the hotel industry the direct channel with the customer fails to replace the intermediation one, and even if the supplier sells directly it will not do it below web fares. ClearlyArticle Search, the supplier cannot sell below web rates otherwise major contracts would be cancelled.

Mexico Expands its Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

Mexico pledges once again its commitment to sustainable tourism by introducing new market-driven, economic opportunities that support conservation and community development. The Mexico Tourism Board and other Mexicans governmental tourism entities, in conjunction with the World Heritage Alliance (WHA), Expedia, Inc. and the United Nations Foundation, have initiated an educational partnership program for Expedia representatives and members of local communities in Mexico to ensure the protection of the delicate biodiversity, while empowering the rural communities through entrepreneurship.

Earlier this year, Expedia employees traveled to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula to work with Community Tours Sian Ka'an (CTSK) -- a local, predominantly Mayan- owned tourism cooperative working to ensure protection of the delicate mix of coral reefs, mangroves, clear deep water pools, and forests, which are increasingly drawing tourists southward from nearby Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

“We are very excited and proud of the benefits that our small local communities are receiving,” commented Mexico Tourism Board CEO, Francisco Lopez Mena on the Community Tours Sian Ka’an. “CTSK is a perfect example of how we can empower a local community with the right entrepreneurial skills, while at the same time protecting the environment and offering visitors a rich and fulfilling experience,” stated Lopez Mena.

A representative of CTSK, Manuel Quezada IX, was recently a panelist during the United Nations’ Dialogue for the Future: Indigenous Entrepreneurship Forum organized with Aveda, Inc., to discuss issues related to indigenous entrepreneurship, opportunities and challenges. Satisfyingly, CTSK has experienced revenue growth of more than 125 percent, and it was recently recognized with the prestigious Equator Prize, given biannually to the world's most innovative community sustainable development project initiatives.

"Tourism is fundamental for creating a constituency for conservation," said Mexico Tourism Secretary Rodolfo Elizondo, “It is important for us as leaders in this industry, to empower our local communities and bring significant changes, financial and environmental benefits for all to enjoy,” added Elizondo.

In 2006 and under Elizondo’s leadership, Mexico became a member of the World Heritage Alliance (WHA), as the first national tourism secretariat to ever join an organization as such. By signing an agreement with the WHA, the country reiterates its commitment to the promotion and preservation of Mexico’s 26 World Heritage sites.

Mexico is ranked first in the Americas and eighth worldwide in UNESCO sites, a distinction given to places of historical, cultural and natural relevance to the world. The country’s islands and protected areas in the Gulf of Baja California, declared a World Heritage Site in 2005, are the most recent addition to Mexico’s impressive list.

Pueblos Magicos Initiative

Another initiative undertaken by the Mexican government is the Pueblos Magicos Program. Mexico’s Tourism Secretariat’s (Sectur) Pueblos Magicos program helps increase tourism to towns located near large cities or other tourist sites, reasonably accessible via roads and that are of particular historic or religious value. Founded in 2001, the Pueblos Magicos program coordinates local, state and federal efforts, channeling funds so the towns may diversify and improve their tourism infrastructure and help inhabitants economically.

While the primary focus of Pueblos Magicos is to develop cultural tourism, other segments, such as eco tourism, adventure tourism and rural tourism also fall under the program’s canopy. As the towns develop the products offered in the different segments, sustainable tourism is cultivated. The program empowers the townspeople, who must initiate and manage the process. Once a town is declared a Pueblo Magico, it receives funds to support the modernization of the micro, small and medium regional businesses related to the tourism industry, such as handicraft shops and restaurants. These grassroots efforts contribute to the tourism sector’s vitality and creativity as well as promote the entrepreneurial spirit.
